Maritime Studies, which has been graded A1 by the Ministry of Shipping. The Vels Thalambur campus is home to the School of Maritime Studies. The school is run by a Director, and its faculty includes highly skilled lecturers who were once mariners as well as instructors with years of experience both on board ships and on land. These individuals take great care in preparing the cadets to become future navigating officers and marine engineers. For the purpose of giving cadets the necessary training, the school has three sophisticated workshops, a cutting-edge "Full-mission Navigation Simulator," and three laboratories. Cadets are taken aboard ships in Chennai harbour as part of the curriculum to familiarise them with shipboard life.
Efficiency in maritime transportation is crucial, especially for a nation like India, which has a long coastline and illustrious maritime traditions. Passenger ships, cargo liners, tankers, carriers, container ships, and numerous other specialised ship types make up Indian merchant shipping. These ships are commanded by qualified navigators, marine engineers, and crew members and are run by both public and private shipping companies. For navigating officers and marine engineers in the merchant navy, the School of Maritime Studies provides an Integrated and comprehensive facility. Candidates who successfully complete their training at this School will be qualified to accept positions as marine engineers or navigating officers on any ship traversing the world's oceans. After completing the mandatory seatime requirements and Competence Exams, navigating cadets who graduate from the School of Maritime Studies will be in charge of the navigation of ships, the proper loading and unloading of cargo, ship maintenance, the safety of passengers and crew, and the observance of various national and international codes of conduct. The trainees advance to the position of junior navigating officers, and after passing each competency exam, they advance in rank and responsibility until they are finally given the authority to command a ship as a Captain.
The School of Maritime Studies at Vels University invited the Indian Register of Shipping, a Classification Society recognised by the Directorate General of Shipping, Government of India, to conduct the CIP. Over the course of two days, a team of four auditors performed a thorough audit.
