Alagappa Chettiar College of Engineering Technology, Karikudi was established in 1952. The institute is managed by Alagappa Chettiar Educational Trust with the sole aim of developing the backward area of Karaikudi into a centre for higher education and provided necessary funds for the establishment of educational institutions. The college is affiliated to Anna University, Tiruchirappalli from 2007-08. In 1966, the institution was handed over to the Government of Tamil Nadu. Anna University, Tiruchirappalli has granted autonomous status to the college from the academic year 2009-10. The college has also been recognized as a research centre and about 80 scholars are pursuing their research. This college has been selected by the World Bank to participate in the Technical Education Quality Improvement Programme. The college got the accreditation by NBA (National Board of Accreditation). The college has been declared as the Best Engineering College of Tamil Nadu in the year 2007.
